Experiences with Mk2 - Summer '05

Written 20.4.2006

Because the Mk1 didn't get done for last summer, I got me a Mk2 as a temp-racer for the summer. Photos and some misc blah blah blah can be found from the Mk2 link on the left. I had quite a lot of stuff in the car that will be in the Mk1 if it ever gets done, and I thought to write a little summary how everything worked. I will not put any photo links in here, almost everything worth of interes can be seen browsing those Mk2 pages.

The engine worked well, nothing else to say. Had to add some oil after the tracksessions, but that's nothing new if you think the revs used (limiter at 6500rpm). Oil filler cap flew away one time, replaced with a new one. The 'wings' from the alternatol 'wheel' went bad, maybe the belt started vibrating and smashed them up or the revs were too much. Have to get a bigger wheel to reduce the alternator revs. The belt flew off one time, it didn't cut, it just flew off. Tightened it some more and didn't happen again.

Carbs and other fuel system gave no trouble. Had a lambda sond in the exhaust, seemed to get quite rich. Should've been adjusted but as it was only a temp-racer..

The clutch was the biggest mechanical problem. I had a brand new LUK unit in it, but it started to slip after ~10 laps. Worked well again after cooling down. Replaced the plate with a 5 paddle plate, lasted a little bit longer but not good. Reason seems to be behing the seat and the steering wheel?

Installing/positioning the seats (racing style) is something that has to be thought better next time. A 2 hours trip to the track was literally a pain in the ass, shorter periods were no problem. 4 point belts were a bit gay in normal every day use, but that's no surprise. The OMP gage fitted almost perfectly, only the rear mounts didn't fit 100%.

GAZ suspension is awesome, as it should be for the price.

The absolutely best thing was the brakes. I knew I could expect something from the setup (XR2, Zimmermann, Ferodo DS, Dot 5.1) but whooah. Not one problem. Not one sign of fading.

Exhaust was made with 2" pipe and one small and one even smaller silencer, and it was kind of 'thrown together'. When it warmed up, you could easily talk at highway speeds. Sounded great also outside. A very nice surprise considering the 'effort' put in it. Was too low, have to think better next time.

If I was doing an Mk2 again, there would be one thing I wouldn't know how to do. The traction while accelerating in a corner was as lame as it can get. Escort RST LSD would propable help a bit, and a 10000 euro Quaife would certainly help, but I don't know of any other solutions. But as for now, I'm not gonna think about that because Mk1 is what I'm after and the front suspension is a bit different. And I think - and hope - the modified tie bar mountings will help in corner-acceleration as much as they help on a straight acceleration.

And two small hints. One: Don't put your money on some tuning-looking Autogauge/Trisco/whatevernoname shit gauges, they are shite. If you can't afford Autometer, go with those dull looking VDO's, they do know their business. And the other hint: For wheel alignment (toe settings, mostly/usually) go to a shop that has the equipment, don't go by the feel. Been there, done that and the behaviour under heavy braking was frightening.

And that's about it. Fun it was and now I know something I didn't know before.
